In the first ever matchup between the two clubs, Appalachian FC held strong despite a late Asheville City SC push as the sides shared the points at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
App claimed the first serious challenge in the 6th minute when they hit ACSC on the counter but a massive block by Ryan Holmes kept App off of the scoresheet. Gustavo Barbosa had a brilliant block of his own 13 minutes later to keep the Blues level.
Dominik Renz had one of the best chances of the night in the 29th minute but his header was placed straight into the arms of the Appalachian keeper as the two sides went into half scoreless.
The Blues had a much better second half, as they were tidier on the ball and even created a couple of one-on-ones with the keeper but could not put the ball in the net.
The Blues earned a corner in the 84th minute with a chance to pull ahead but the ball was cleared to safety as the inaugural match of the Old North Cup finished in a scoreless draw.
Amadou Diop was named the Wicked Pie Player of the Match for his effort on the night.
The Blues return for their home opener at Greenwood Field on Saturday, May 16th as part of a doubleheader with the Women’s squad. The Men host Hickory FC at 3:30PM while the Women are slated to kick off at 6:30PM against Swarm FC.
