Two of Asheville City SC’s, one current and one recent, standout women’s players, Juli Viera and Ilana Izquierdo, earned call-ups to their respective national teams. Viera will be representing Uruguay while Izquierdo will be heading into camp for Colombia. This moment marks one of great pride for both players.
Viera is no stranger to the international stage, having been with the Uruguay program since 2016. She says the opportunity to wear her nation’s colors still carries a deeper meaning.
“It’s always an incredible honor and a source of immense pride to represent my country on the international stage, doing what I love,” Viera said. “Fútbol holds a special place in Uruguay’s culture, making the experience even more meaningful. The emotions that come with it are overwhelming, sometimes beyond words.”
Viera served as captain for the under-20 Uruguay squad in 2022, and stated that she hopes to continue growing as a leader in the senior squad.
“This team is rich in experience and professionalism, making it the perfect time to build deeper connections with my teammates,” she said. “Hopefully, I can achieve the same role with the main team in the future.”
For Ilana Izquierdo, the national team call reflects years of discipline and belief in herself.
“Being called up for the national team is the dream come true in all aspects,” said Izquierdo, when asked what the call-up means to her. “To be able to represent my country is the biggest feeling of happiness and pride that an athlete can have.”
With rich experience at both the collegiate and club levels, Izquierdo recognizes the added expectations that come with representing her nation.
“It’s always exciting, but it is also a big moment of responsibility,” said Izquierdo. “Just in the simple fact that we are not just representing ourselves, our families, but an entire country. I am playing next to the best Colombian players, and we all want to perform at our highest level.”
As Viera and Izquierdo continue to elevate their games on the global stage, their international appearances stand as a testament to Asheville City SC’s commitment to fostering the development of talent.
